Subject: [LbNA] Question from a newbie

Hello,

I'm sure this has been brought up before in the past but I just
wanted to throw my 2 cents in. For me letterboxing started out to be
all about the hiking. Being outside in the woods, where I have always
felt most comfortable. But then as I started collecting the stamps
and realized what true works of art some of them are, I started to
enjoy these as well. I'm fairly new to this hobby of stamp collecting
and only have found 27 so far. They all look great on the shelf over
the kitchen cabinets......but I'm running out of room. For those of
you who have collected 100+ stamps. Where do you keep them all? I'm
also having one heck of a time keeping the cats from batting them
around and have found some small chew marks in the rubber of a couple
of them. Do you build some kind of special cabinet just for the
stamps you have found? If I keep collecting at the rate I'm going at,
I'll run out of room in no time.

Thanks for your help

Kevin O'Nassis

Hi "Kevin",

What we do is paint them various colors with lead base paint and glue
on green glittery eyes if at all possible. Then glue them on the
windows, adds a nice decorative touch I think. I do agree the
handcarved ones are the best. What do you do with the handmade
logbooks? I like to take each page out, lay them side by side and
laminate them into placemats.....quite unique actually. By the time
the holidays roll around we'll have enough to give everyone a complete
set plus a few extra for the dog.

Cheers,
catbead

Well, guys, I'm just outraged at both of you taking home those
treasures! It's very important to leave these things in place so we can
share our great hobby with everyone else on the planet. That's why I
never leave a letterbox location without nailing up on the closest tree
or building a huge 3x5 ft. sign with big black lettering and a giant
arrow pointing out the spot.
Take care,

So this is where folks get their 'hand carved stamps'? They collect
and then plant again!?!?! I was wondering how I was going to make
more time for this 'hobby'.

Well Kevin, you have quite the dilemma there! We're actually selling
our condo and upgrading to a larger house with more room to store our
stamps. The fun part is when you have multiple versions of one stamp!
Then you can compare the carving skills that the placer has developed
over the years!

Our suggestion if you run out of room is to get a pet rodent. A
hampster may do, but chipmunks, squirrels and the like are truly
best. This way you can feed the stamp to your new found friend and
once it is finely gnawed, repeat the hike and place the stamp back in
the box!

Of course, if you get reeeeeaaalllly bored go to Petco and buy one of
those cat leashes. Strap it to your pet [rat, chipmunch, etc.] and
take your critter hiking! Then he can also gnaw on the tupperware!
We hear is does wonders for keeping those teeth sharp and short...
mastercarve and PZKut are just to soft to actually whittle away that
tough calcium build up....

-Steve , Heidi, and Madras

Plus side of getting the rodent is really when it chokes on the
stamp, cuz then you can have a gathering to celebrate its entombment!

Ruby,
The Georgia State Parks expressly forbid nailing up on any tree or
building a 3x5 ft. sign with big black lettering and a giant arrow.
The sign must be brown with WHITE lettering. The combination to the
sign must be kept on file at the park office, but the park ranger
will not unlock the sign for you. Please keep this in mind if you
plan on placing any letterbox in a GA State Park.

I'm going to say that no one is that uhhh...what is ths word I'm looking for...idiotic...that's the one. Whoever would do that makes an idiot look like a GENIUS. I think that someone who thinks that they're funny is trying to make a joke. It must suck to be as creative as you. As you probably already know, comedy won't pay your bills, so don't quit your day job...if you have one.

kevin_onassis wrote:
Well, I must say you folks certainly have given me some great new
ideas. Just last night I was talking to one of the craftsman in the
village where I work and I explained my dilemma to him. He said it
would be no trouble at all to slap together a set of shelves for me.
So that should solve my storage problem and I should be able to
continue to collect these little works of art for quite some time now.

I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to be doing with the
logbooks I have found. Scattering them about was great fun at first
but as with a lot of things this soon lost it's appeal. Perhaps I
could bring them home as well and make some good use of them. I'll
give this some thought and let you all know what ideas I can come up
with.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Mad, schmad. I'm just happy to know that all of the missing ADG
stamps have found a good home. I thought lack of maintenance and
sheer laziness made them disappear but the one industrious fool
theory makes more sense. If you own a digital camera please take a
snapshot of our old friends and e-mail it to
deelooshunall@freak.com. To save time should I just start mailing
our new stamps directly to you?

P.S. If you need a part time job I've seen several ads for villages

Have you ever considered nailing them all to your front door and rolling
permanent ink on them; getting butt naked, take a running start and getting as
many of those images on your body as possible???? It would be like a huge
tattoo of your findings. You could show them off at the next big event that you
attend.

Do you have a Union Card? There are a lot of amatuer idiots and
people who just wear funny hats. But most villages are looking for at
least Journeyman Idiots for insurance reasons, and also for the
quality of the stupidity that you get from a trained professional.

Dear Folk (especially "Who Could Hang a Name on You?")

Signs and geoposition indicators have no style at all! Shame on you.
Sigh.

Now I like to use good ole patriotic Americium-242 slid sideways into
the rubber of the stamp. Then all the finder has to do is get
themselves a nice Geiger counter (an old Civil Defense one will do)
and they are off to the races. I know, you can get a better deal on
radium but remember this: that was discovered by the Europeans. Get
with the flagwaving times. Okay, you folk up in the Bay area can also
use Californium (it emits neutrons! whee!) for that cosmopolitan
touch.

Off to carve me up some Dick Blick.

The girl with colitus goes by,
